In typical coal mine applications, a combination of main fans, booster fans and auxiliary fans is used. Main ventilation fans, usually located on the surface at shafts or drift portals, establish the overall airflow pattern through the mine, drawing fresh air in and exhausting contaminated air. Booster fans may be installed in intermediate locations to overcome high resistances in extensive networks or deep mines. Flameproof auxiliary fans supply local ventilation to development headings and production faces via ducting, ensuring that gas and dust are removed from the areas where workers and machinery operate.

Ventilation design for coal mine applications must consider a wide range of factors, including seam gas content, production rate, roadway dimensions, number of active panels and potential emergency scenarios such as fires or explosions. Regulatory requirements typically specify minimum airflow per worker, maximum allowable gas concentrations and design criteria for explosion-proof equipment. Mine fans used in these applications are often fitted with flameproof motors, non-sparking impellers, robust casings and advanced monitoring systems for vibration, temperature and gas levels.

Beyond normal operation, coal mine ventilation systems must be capable of supporting safe evacuation and emergency response. This may involve reversing or adjusting airflow in affected districts, isolating sections with explosion-proof stoppings and coordinating fan operation with gas monitoring and control centres. Modern coal mine applications increasingly rely on variable-speed drives, automated controls and real-time monitoring to optimise airflow distribution and energy consumption while maintaining safety margins. In all cases, properly designed, installed and maintained ventilation fans are a central element in the safe and productive operation of coal mines.
