heading forcing fan

heading forcing fan

A heading forcing fan is an auxiliary press-in ventilator used to supply fresh air to development headings during drift, crosscut, or raise advance. Its function is to overcome the changing resistance of the ventilation duct as the drivage lengthens, maintaining the required face quantity for statutory compliance and safe, productive conditions. By pushing clean intake air to the cutting or drilling zone, the fan enhances methane dilution, speeds blast fume clearance, and suppresses respirable dust around workers and equipment.

Designers commonly select high-efficiency axial units for compactness and ease of installation on skids or hanging frames. Where higher static pressure is necessary—long duct runs, multiple elbows, or constricted geometries—contra-rotating axial stages provide the extra head without a large diameter increase. In potentially explosive atmospheres, explosion-proof drives and starters are mandatory, paired with anti-static ducting and compliant connectors. Integration with a VFD allows operators to ramp speed as resistance rises, preserving duty while minimizing energy waste.

Good practice begins with accurate estimation of system losses, including leakage allowances, and selection of a fan whose operating point lies near the efficiency peak. Inlet collectors, smooth reducers, well-sealed joints, and correctly proportioned face diffusers prevent pressure penalties and recirculation. On commissioning, technicians verify quantity and static pressure at the face and confirm noise and vibration against site limits. Periodic inspection of blades, couplings, and bearings ensures reliability throughout the heading cycle.

  • Use case: development headings requiring assured face quantity
  • Benefits: improved gas control, faster re-entry after blasting, better visibility
  • Options: EX packages, silencers, monitoring sensors, variable speed
