underground forcing fan

underground forcing fan

An underground forcing fan is a dedicated auxiliary ventilator that delivers fresh intake air under positive pressure to headings, faces, and localized workplaces through a duct network. By providing a controlled press-in jet, the fan offsets frictional losses, fittings, and leakage so that the specified face quantity is actually achieved at the point of work. In coal and hard-rock operations alike, this assured airflow is critical for methane dilution, fume clearance after blasting, diesel particulate control, and temperature management.

Most underground forcing fans are axial machines due to their compact form factor and high specific flow, with optional contra-rotating stages to increase static pressure where duct runs are long or include multiple bends and transitions. In gassy mines, the package typically includes explosion-proof (Ex) motors, compliant starters, anti-static ducting, and certified cable glands. Variable-frequency drives (VFDs) are widely adopted to trim performance as headings advance and system resistance changes, minimizing energy use while protecting ventilation margins.

Performance selection begins with required face airflow and the calculated total pressure of the duct string, including starter pieces, elbows, reducers, diffusers, and expected leakage. The fan’s characteristic curve should intersect the system curve near peak efficiency with adequate allowance for aging, dust loading, and installation tolerances. Practical measures—smooth inlet collectors, airtight joints, tensioned hangers, and well-designed face diffusers—preserve pressure and reduce recirculation risk. Commissioning verifies pressure and quantity at the face, while routine monitoring of vibration and bearing temperature supports predictive maintenance and long service life.
