Mine ventilation safety is the practice of using a properly designed and well-maintained ventilation system to protect miners from hazardous atmospheres underground. The primary safety objectives of mine ventilation are to dilute explosive gases such as methane, control toxic gases like carbon monoxide and diesel exhaust, suppress airborne dust and maintain acceptable temperature and humidity levels. Achieving these goals requires reliable fans, sound ventilation design and strict adherence to regulatory requirements.

Regulations usually specify minimum airflow quantities, allowable gas concentrations and dust exposure limits for different types of mines. To comply, operators must ensure that main and auxiliary ventilation systems are capable of delivering sufficient fresh air to every part of the mine, even under abnormal conditions. This includes providing backup power or standby fans for critical shafts, using explosion-proof fans and motors in gassy environments and implementing effective gas monitoring and alarm systems.

Mine ventilation safety also depends on proper control of airflow patterns and prevention of recirculation. Poorly sealed stoppings, open doors or damaged regulators can create short circuits where contaminated air bypasses the working faces.
