non-metal mines

Non-metal mines, including operations extracting salt, potash, limestone, gypsum and other industrial minerals, also depend on robust ventilation systems to ensure safe and efficient working conditions. Although gas explosion risks may be lower in many non-metal deposits compared with coal seams, these mines can still generate dust, diesel exhaust, blasting fumes and heat that must be controlled through adequate airflow. Ventilation in non-metal mines is therefore an essential part of occupational safety, environmental control and overall production planning.

The layout of non-metal mines can vary from room-and-pillar designs in flat-lying deposits to sublevel stoping or other methods in more complex geological structures. Ventilation systems must adapt to these layouts, using main fans to establish airflow through the primary entries and returns, and auxiliary fans to direct fresh air to active working areas. In some non-metal mines, high humidity or corrosive atmospheres may be present, especially in evaporite deposits like salt or potash. In these cases, the selection of fan materials, coatings and electrical components must consider corrosion resistance and long-term durability.

Dust control is a key concern in non-metal mines, as many industrial minerals generate fine particles during drilling, blasting, loading and crushing. Proper ventilation helps dilute and remove dust from the breathing zone, but it is most effective when combined with local capture systems, water sprays and good housekeeping practices. Mine fans used in these applications should provide stable airflow at the required duty point and withstand continuous operation in dusty conditions, with appropriate filtration or protective measures to limit the ingress of particles into motors and bearings.

While explosion-proof equipment may not always be mandatory in non-metal mines, risk assessments must still consider potential gas pockets, diesel emissions and confined spaces. Modern ventilation designs integrate monitoring of airflow, dust levels and gases, along with variable-speed drives and control systems that allow adjustment of fan performance according to production needs. By selecting suitable mine fans and designing ventilation networks that reflect the characteristics of non-metal deposits, operators can create safe, healthy and efficient environments for workers and equipment in a wide range of industrial mineral mining projects.
